DUB’s favorite persons (3) The young ones

This is my all-time favorite sitcom that I can watch over and over again. When this was originally aired I saw these guys on a black and white set in my bedroom at home.
The main characters were four students sharing a house: violent punk metal Vyvyan (Adrian Edmondson), would-be anarchist Rick (Rik Mayall), hippie Neil (Nigel Planer), and womanizer Mike (Christopher Ryan). It also featured Alexei Sayle, who played the their landlord, Jerzei Balowski.
The show combined traditional sitcom style with violent slapstick, non sequitur plot-turns and surrealism. Another great thing about the show were the speaking props and animals. And of course the sudden appearances of pop groups like Dexy’s Midnight Runners and Madness.

“Neil’s head”
Indeed a joy to watch these guys. A bit shocking also, given the time in which it was aired in the Netherlands. My personal favorite was the housekeeper, mr. Balowski. The Russian bloke who tried to learn Swedish, because he was about to get himself a Swedish blonde. I remember rolling from the couch, laughing, as Balowski was demonstrating the first Swedish sentence he memorised: “oh oh oh where is me Volvo”.
There is another good thing about this series, it sprouted the collaboration between Rick Mayall and Adrian Edmondson for “Bottom”. Now Bottom took off where the Young Ones left. Bolder and more aggressive jokes, pictorial violence in the first degree.. Just awesome! And Bottom on it’s own was good for one movie: “Guesthouse Paradiso”. I think I am going to post about this classic reel on my own blog…
